Cupid's favorite holiday is officially upon us, and that means it's time to sit back and enjoy the annual cheese fest. Heart-eyed lovers sharing glances over steak and lobster, a parade of giant teddy bears and heart-shaped balloons heading to the checkout counter at Walmart, public displays of affection that would make your grandmother clutch her pearls—you know, the usual. But to be honest, isn't Valentine's Day kind of meant to be cheesy anyway? Not that there's ever a bad day to profess your undying love to your forever crush, but why not lean into the cheese and make a whole to-do out of it while simultaneously making the blushing love-obsessed cherub proud?
Maybe instead of just showering your sweetheart with heart-adorned gifts or dropping a ton of cash on a fancy dinner (although I'll gladly accept either), you could double down on the cheesy directive and share a heart-shaped pizza with your lovebug. Seriously, who doesn't want a love note made out of dough covered in melty cheese and all their favorite toppings for Valentine's Day?

But, when it comes to choosing the best heart-shaped pizza to make googly eyes at your lover over, you might be trying to decide whether to go for Pizza Hut's or Papa John's lovable offering, and lucky for you, I tried both to determine which one is most likely to make your special someone swoon. Here's everything you need to know.

Starting off strong, Pizza Hut's lovable heart-shaped offering, available until Feb. 22, is a medium 12-inch pie that comes with one topping for $11.99. Since my partner and I have different pizza topping preferences, I opted to get the crispy cupped pepperoni as my one topping and added Italian sausage for an additional $1.60. With the additional topping, the total before taxes, tip, and delivery fees came out to $13.59. All in it ended up being $25.09. The pizza arrived fully intact and uncut, which honestly makes for a stunning visual in the box.

Like Pizza Hut's heart-shaped pizza, Papa John's, available until Feb. 15, is a 12-inch medium pie with one topping for $11.99. My partner decided to get this one with spinach, green bell peppers, and onions, which ended up costing $15.79 before the additional fees. In total, it came to just about the same as Pizza Hut's at $25.72. Just like Pizza Hut, Papa John's didn't precut the pizza, making it pretty much the dealer's choice for how you'd like to dig in. Talk about establishing a baseline.
Pizza Hut vs. Papa John's: Which Heart-Shaped Pizza Is Better?

Of course, now that I've established the baseline, let's get to the answer you're probably dying to know. Which heart-shaped pizza is better? In terms of delivery, both pizzas arrived around the same time, with Pizza Hut making it to our door first and Papa John's showing up just about six minutes later. With both pizzas in hand, my partner and I set off to enjoy our deliciously romantic taste test.
For starters, we noticed that although both were sold as 12-inch pizzas, Papa John's pie seemed slightly larger and thinner than Pizza Hut's. Also, Papa John's included packets of crushed red pepper, Parmesan cheese, special seasoning, and pepperoncini peppers, which honestly earns bonus points, imo. Minus 10 points for forgetting the garlic sauce, but I digress.
From a visual perspective, both pizzas were symmetrically heart-shaped, and as far as toppings go, they both were pretty generously covered. That said, Papa John's was a little more generous with the cheese on theirs. Additionally, Pizza Hut's pizza looked as if it had been cooked a little longer, giving it a deep golden-brown color. Both pizzas came uncut, and after spending an unhealthy amount of time deciding exactly how to slice them, we settled on cutting them both into squares.

With both pizzas cut and the mood lighting set, we sat down, turned on Real Housewives of Atlanta, and dug into our love-soaked dinner. While both pizzas were delicious, Papa John's was the clear winner. The healthy amount of cheese, ultra-fresh toppings, and thinner, almost cracker-like crust made for a better pie overall. It was also a bit less dry than Pizza Hut's pizza, which, to my suspicion, was slightly overcooked for my liking.
Although I personally preferred Pizza Hut's crispy cupped pepperoni and sausage, I would've liked them more on Papa John's heart-shaped pie. In terms of value, both pizzas were well worth the spend, but if you had to choose one or the other, I'd go with Papa John's. Full disclosure, regardless of which one came out on top, we ended up eating both pizzas in one sitting, but can you really blame us?
Regardless of whether your perfect match is Pizza Hut, Papa John's, or one of the several other places serving up heart-shaped pie for Valentine's Day, you can't go wrong with piling on the cheese. Just remember to get all their favorite toppings.
