One of the elite players in college basketball this year, University of North Carolina power forward Caleb Wilson, incurred a fracture in his left hand on Tuesday, according to Myron Medcalf of ESPN.
Wilson departed the Tar Heels’ eventual 75-66 defeat to the Miami Hurricanes mid-game on Tuesday, although he did return with his left palm and wrist taped. He finished with a season-worst 12 points.
“X-rays taken during the [Miami] game were negative, and he returned to play later in the second half vs. the Hurricanes, but additional imaging done in Chapel Hill revealed the fracture,” UNC indicated in a press statement. “The evaluation process is ongoing to determine the timetable for Wilson’s return.”
The freshman big, who’s currently projected as the No. 4 pick in Ricky O’Donnell of SB Nation’s latest mock draft (he’s also fourth in our mock this week), is pacing the No. 11-ranked Tar Heels in scoring and rebounding.
Across 24 contests with North Carolina (he has scored in double digits for all of them), the 19-year-old has been averaging 19.8 points on .578/.259/.713 shooting splits, 9.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.5 steals, and 1.4 blocks per.
Is Wilson done for what will most likely be his only collegiate season? It certainly seems possible. March Madness is mere weeks away, after all.

In O’Donnell’s mock lottery simulation, our Bulls had leapt from the No. 10 pick to the fourth selection, where they’d grab Wilson. O’Donnell raves about Wilson’s comprehensive, 94-foot defense and aptitude at the rim. Wilson is a solid passer, downhill scorer, and midrange shooter — but he’s not a frequent or efficient 3-point shooter. That 25.9 percent conversion rate arrives on just 1.1 triple takes.
The projected top three picks in the 2026 NBA Draft seem pretty securely set in stone. In some order, BYU small forward AJ Dybantsa, Duke power forward Cameron Boozer, and injury-prone Kansas combo guard Darryn Peterson seem to be the NCAA superstar-level cream of the crop this season.
Still, Wilson, Houston guard Kingston Flemings, breakout University of Illinois guard Keaton Wagler, and Louisville guard Mikel Brown Jr. hover around that next tier within the top-10. Whether or not an extended Wilson absence adversely impacts his draft stock long-term remains to be seen.
