Arsenal had to settle for a 1-1 draw at Brentford on Thursday, dropping two points in what is becoming a fascinating Premier League title race.
Following Manchester City winning 3-0 against Fulham on Wednesday, as well as third-place Aston Villa nicking a late win against Brighton, the pressure was back on the Gunners to respond.
After an uninspiring first half in which they only attempted one shot, a sublime header from Noni Madueke put Arsenal in front in the 61st minute at the Gtech Community Stadium.
However, Keane Lewis- Potter equalised 10 minutes later after a long throw caused chaos in the Arsenal box, and despite both teams having excellent chances to win it late on, it ended all square on a wet night in London.
The stalemate means Arsenal’s lead at the top of the table is now four points, with Man City’s ominous form suggesting we could be in for an enthralling title race.
After a very quiet opening 20 minutes, it was Brentford who had the first real chance of the game. David Raya made a mess of rolling the ball to Declan Rice, giving it straight to Mathias Jensen. The Bees captain crossed into the box for Igor Thiago to head at goal, but Raya redeemed himself with a sharp save down to his left to deny the Brazilian.
That was not exactly the start of a barrage of efforts, though. Arsenal had plenty of the ball in Brentford territory in the final 15 minutes of the first half, but created very little with it as the game went into half-time goalless.
In fact, the Gunners attempted just one shot in the first half – a Gabriel Magalhães header that was blocked by Sepp van den Berg – the fewest they have recorded in the first half of a Premier League game since August 2021 (one vs Man City).
Arteta brought Martin Ødegaard on for Eberechi Eze at half-time, and whether it was due to the introduction of their captain or getting a sharp-tongued team-talk from their manager, Arsenal came out with more purpose.
The visitors had a further four shots in the first 13 minutes of the second half, though none of them tested Brentford goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher.
Their first shot on target on the hour mark broke the deadlock, though, with Piero Hincapié whipping in a brilliant cross from the left for Madueke to cushion his header back across goal and into the far corner to the right of Kelleher’s despairing dive.
It was the 15th Premier League goal of Madueke’s career, but only his third with his head (also vs West Ham in May 2024 and vs Wolves in January 2025, both for Chelsea).
Brentford had an excellent chance to equalise soon after, but Lewis-Potter made a mess of a free header at the back post from an inswinging corner, nodding it wide.
He didn’t make a mess of his second effort, though. Ten minutes after falling behind, Brentford were level when a long throw from Michael Kayode was flicked on by Van den Berg, and Lewis-Potter was there unmarked to head home.
It was the fourth time the Bees had scored from a throw-in this season in the Premier League, level for the most in the division along with Burnley, while it was the first goal from a throw that Arsenal had conceded in the league in 2025-26.
It was the last action of the game for Lewis-Potter as he was replaced by Mikkel Damsgaard, but he had just scored on home soil for the first time since December 2023; each of his last eight strikes prior across all competitions had come away from home.
Thiago had a fantastic chance to put the hosts ahead late on when he nicked the ball away from Cristhian Mosquera, but the young defender made amends for missing the first tackle by producing a brilliant block to deny the Brentford striker.
There was another opportunity for Thiago in stoppage time that he lashed over, before a run in behind at the other end from Jurriën Timber led to substitute Gabriel Martinelli having a brilliant opportunity to win it for Arsenal, but Kelleher rushed out to make the save.
It was an exhausting ending after a fairly dour first half, but Arsenal were forced to settle for a point, having come up against Keith Andrews’ impressive Bees, who stay seventh but very much still in the race for European football.
