It’s hard not to frame anything financial about the Los Angeles Dodgers in a derisive way. Which isn’t the same thing as saying Max Muncy is an idiot, or doesn’t have his personal reasons, or whatever. He is free to do as he pleases, and the Dodgers are smart to take advantage. If he’s happy, that’s really all that matters, because he’s ultimately going to have plenty of money when his playing days are over.

Muncy was already signed through 2026 on a previous cheapy deal that was going to pay him just $10 million (this is the fourth cheapy extension he’s signed with them). So now, in exchange for a minimum of $10 million of future money ($7 million next year and a $3 million buyout), he’s giving up next year AND a team option for 2028. If he keeps raking, he makes $17 million total for those two seasons.
Max Muncy is 35 and has dealt with some injury issues, but he’s also coming off 100 games of .243/.376/.470/137 wRC+ hitting, and a 2.9 WAR. If he were a free agent right now, it’s not impossible to imagine him getting literally ten times the 2027 salary he just got from the Dodgers. You can’t really overstate how obscenely team-friendly this deal is for the Dodgers, especially because they get the two extra years of control but the “oldest” year is optional!
Imagine having the extreme financial advantages the Dodgers already have AND ALSO great players are giving them extreme team-friendly deals. Must be nice.
