Why Marcus Rashford’s Man Utd future is set to be decided in the next month

Manchester United loanee Marcus Rashford has received a major boost in his bid to remain at Barcelona beyond the current season.

Rashford has enjoyed a new lease of life in Spain after a tumultuous final few years at Old Trafford, and Barcelona have a £26m option-to-buy included in his season-long loan deal.

Barcelona’s financial situation and Rashford’s age mean the Catalan giants face a difficult summer decision over whether to sign him permanently.

While not a guaranteed starter, the 28-year-old has found his goalscoring touch again, with eight goal contributions in the Champions League alone this season.

The i Paper takes a look at how Rashford’s future could be decided when Barcelona’s key presidential elections take place on 15 March…

    Why is presidential election key?

A club president on our shores is a more ceremonial position. Some clubs, like United, don’t even have one.

In Spain, presidents are a big deal and have major power when it comes to making top-levels decisions. Candidates can hang their campaigns on a certain pledge they promise to enact upon being elected.

Barcelona will hold their 15th presidential election in a month’s time. The most recent president, Joan Laporta, who has had to resign in order to re-run, is the favourite to win again, but there are five other candidates vying to depose the colourful 63-year-old.

One of the first decisions awaiting whoever wins the race to the Nou Camp hotseat would be whether to part with the limited spare cash available by securing Rashford for the long-term.

Laporta is a big Rashford fan and was instrumental in bringing him to Barcelona in the first place, along with sporting director Deco. Should finances permit, The i Paper has been told Laporta would support a permanent deal – and so would at least two of the other contenders.

“We want to instil a system with more organisation, data and support and meritocracy,” presidential candidate Marc Ciria tells The i Paper.

“Therefore, the continuity of players like Rashford will not be decided by personal affinities, but by the fact he is fitting into the overall sporting project.”

One potential threat is another frontrunner, Victor Font, who has said he would like to replace Deco, a key Rashford supporter, as sporting director if he were to become elected.

    What does Rashford want?

Ideally, Rashford wants to stay in Barcelona. Away from the “negative stories”, as someone close to him insisted, he has been able to settle quickly into life in Spain, on and off the pitch.

Sources added that they feel there is more to come from Rashford, once he has properly settled and overcome some injury issues.

Given how it all ended with United, a return home to Manchester could be fraught with problems, but it is understood Rashford retains no ill-will towards the club he has supported since childhood.

There are two years left on his current contract, and should he have to return to United, then he is willing to do that. The landscape at Old Trafford has changed markedly since Rashford departed, making reintegration possible.

    What do Man Utd want?

United have been planning for life without their former prodigal son. That was the main thinking in the relatively low option-to-buy clause installed in his Barcelona contract.

Given how Ineos are trying to transform all areas of the failing giant, dealing with Rashford’s future could become an unwelcome distraction.

Another loan is not out of the question. Cutting Rashford’s £325,000-a-week salary from the books is the main goal. However that happens.

Does Rashford have any other options?

When Rashford moved to Barcelona, other clubs from across Europe made enquiries. Whether they would be willing to revisit their interest is, at this stage, unclear.

The fact United could be willing to accept less than the £26m current asking price may alert other suitors.

Rashford’s eyes have been opened by how he has enjoyed playing overseas. He would be open to exploring a new foreign challenge elsewhere, another source added.

Aston Villa are understood to be monitoring the situation. Rashford performed well in patches during his loan spell in the Midlands last season, but Villa were put off by United’s £40m asking price when looking at making a permanent swoop.
