Channel 4 scrambles to cut back disgraced Mandelson from Blair documentary

Peter Mandelson will still appear in a landmark new Channel 4 documentary about Sir Tony Blair – but the broadcaster has dramatically cut back his contributions after police launched an investigation into the peer’s links to Jeffrey Epstein.

Lord Mandelson was interviewed on camera for The Tony Blair Story, a major three-part series, charting the former Prime Minister’s meteoric rise, his decade in Downing Street and post-politics career, which launches next Tuesday.

The disgraced former US ambassador, who played a key role in the creation of New Labour and backed Blair to become party leader in 1994 over rival Gordon Brown, was set to appear prominently in all three episodes, The i Paper understands.

But revelations of the extent of Mandelson’s friendship with Epstein, and a police investigation into allegations that he leaked confidential Downing Street emails to the convicted child sex offender, have forced Channel 4 to make late changes to the series.

Editing out Mandelson altogether would have undermined what is intended to be the definitive telling of the Blair story, in which the former spin doctor played a central role.

Channel 4 instead agreed a compromise that his contributions should remain but his presence would be substantially diminished, The i Paper has learnt.

A production insider said: “Channel 4 took the decision to reduce Mandelson’s contributions in all three films, but not eliminate them entirely, because of the central role he played in the New Labour government and his proximity to Tony Blair during the period covered by the series.”

Channel 4 was approached for comment.

The broadcaster confirmed that an end card will appear on screen to make it clear to viewers that Mandelson’s contributions were filmed before documents from the Epstein files disclosing the extent of their friendship were released this year.

Mandelson does not appear in promotional material for the series, which includes interviews with former US President Bill Clinton, Alastair Campbell and Blair’s wife Cherie. The couple’s children also feature with daughter Kathryn, now 37 and a family law barrister, giving her first interview.

The series is directed by Bafta-winner Michael Waldman, who conducted an extensive interview with Blair, and produced by 72 Films, the makers of The Rise and Fall of Boris Johnson.

Other figures who have found themselves edited out of TV history include newsreader Huw Edwards whose voiceover cameo in a 2006 episode of Doctor Who was removed after his conviction for accessing indecent images of children.

The BBC avoids using Edwards’s announcement of the death of Queen Elizabeth II in archive reports.

The 2025 BBC MasterChef series was edited to include fewer jokes between departing presenters Gregg Wallace and John Torode.

An internal report upheld some misconduct claims against Wallace while Torode was said to have used a racist term, which he said he had “no recollection” of. Two MasterChef contestants asked for their appearances to be edited out of the series when it aired last autumn.

Kevin Spacey’s entire performance as billionaire J. Paul Getty in Ridley Scott’s film All The Money In The World was excised by the director after the actor faced sexual misconduct allegations in 2017.

His scenes were hastily reshot with veteran actor Christopher Plummer taking the role. Spacey was subsequently acquitted of sexual assault charges.

Revelations in the Blair series include Cherie claiming that her husband had “lost contact with reality” by the time he resigned as prime minister nearly two decades ago.

She added that Sir Tony, the longest-serving Labour prime minister in British history, “can make people think they hear what they want to hear”.

Campbell talks about chancing upon Sir Tony at his desk in Number 10 late at night following the invasion of Iraq in March 2003.

He says: “It was one of those moments when I wished I could paint. It was an absolute portrait in the isolation of power.”

For his part, Blair says during the series: “One of the things you learn is that ultimately you sit in the seat. You’ve got to take the decision.”

The Tony Blair Story will begin on Tuesday 17 February at 9pm on Channel 4, with the latter two episodes to follow on the 18 and 19 February.
