GREECE, N.Y. — Greece’s new town supervisor is proposing changes to what he calls excessive benefits for town managers.
Supervisor Jeff McCann wants to eliminate a rule that allows town managers to cash out unused sick time upon retirement. He said the rule cost taxpayers more than $240,000 last year when three managers retired.
The rule has been in effect since 2022 and town employees who aren’t managers don’t have the same benefits. The health insurance policy also changed in 2022, allowing managers to get insurance at no cost when they retired.
Under McCann’s proposal, managers who retire will be treated like any other town employee and continue paying the same premium contribution they paid while employed. He’s also proposing a reduction in the amount of compensatory time managers can be paid.
Former town supervisor Bill Reilich said the full town board voted on those benefits and he did not benefit from the rule when he left office following his 12-year tenure. Voters in Greece had to elect a new town supervisor last November after term limits prevented Reilich from seeking a fourth term this year.
The town board will vote on the proposed changes at its next meeting, set for Thursday, Feb. 19, at the town hall on Vince Tofany Boulevard.
