ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester City School District honored the next generation of Black scholars and leaders, celebrating their academic, community, and leadership accomplishments.
News10NBC’s Tom Kowalski spoke with some of the young scholars at the ceremony held at the district office. He reported from the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Library on South Avenue, where a quote commonly attributed to Frederick Douglass is displayed: “It’s easier to build strong children than repair broken men.”
Arthur Williams, a senior from Edison Tech High School, was one of the students honored. He read the quote and shared what it meant to him.
Ni-yana Ortiz-Billins, also from Edison Tech High School, echoed the sentiment. “You can’t teach old dog new tricks,” she said. “So, it’s really easier to build stronger children. And a sense of raising them better than generations before us and stuff like that,” said Ortiz-Billins.
Elijah Espada, Board of Education Student Representative, shared his thoughts on being a young Black leader. “There wasn’t a lot of opportunities that were given to us, and there was a lot of prejudice and a lot of opportunities that got shut down for us because, you know, the way that we are, and it motivated me to become the person who I am today, you know, that that experience, you know, being shut out, you know, being, you know, like what? What comes next?” said Espada.
All three students are heading off to college later this year. Williams is heading to Alfred State, while Ortiz-Billins and Espada have long-term dreams of law school.
