The Queer Student Association forfeited its position on the Media Planning Board Monday, citing the University’s cancellation of the student-run publications, Alice Magazine and Nineteen Fifty-Six.
The Media Planning Board is a standing committee under the Office of Student Life. It has jurisdiction over Alice, the Black Warrior Review, The Crimson White, Marr’s Field Journal, Nineteen Fifty-Six, Southern Historian, WVUA-FM, and other media enterprises as recognized by the board. Student representatives from the Black Student Union, SGA, First Year Council, the College of Communication and Information Sciences Ambassadors and The Source and also on the board.
The board also selects the top leader of each student media outlet housed under the Office of Student Media, including, previously, Alice and Nineteen Fifty-Six.
“We cannot in good faith support the publication of a new magazine because we are firmly against the censorship of marginalized voices,” the QSA executive board said in a statement on Instagram. “Additionally, we once again urge the University to reinstate these publications.”
In December 2025, the University announced the permanent suspension of the two magazines, citing a federal memo issued by U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi in July. The memo to federal agencies provided “non-binding suggestions” to help federal funds recipients comply with antidiscrimination laws. Alice and Nineteen Fifty-Six were targeted toward women and Black students, respectively.
After the magazines were shut down, the University proposed replacing them with a new magazine that would feature a “variety of voices and perspectives,” a University spokesperson previously told The Crimson White. It is unclear whether the new magazine’s chief editor will be selected by the Media Planning Board.
“It was kind of a no-brainer for us,” said Sammy Bignault, president of QSA. “We have countless QSA members, QSA exec of many years that have put their love and time into Alice Magazine and Nineteen Fifty-Six, and it’s one of the only places in magazines and stories that would represent queer stories.”
