Bud Cort, the star of the beloved 1971 cult classic film Harold and Maude, has died at 77, Variety reported.
The film told the story of a suicide-obsessed young man from a wealthy family who meets an elderly Holocaust survivor, played by Ruth Gordon, who teaches him an entirely new perspective on life. Their friendship eventually evolves into a romantic relationship. Set to a mesmerizing soundtrack by Cat Stevens and directed by Hal Ashby, the film went down in history for its hilarious, dark nature and reminder to embrace the beauty of life.
Born Walter Edward Cox in Rye, New York, Cort kicked off his career after he was cast by director Robert Altman in M*A*S*H and Brewster McCloud in 1970. Cort also appeared in Heat, Dogma, and The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou. His television roles included Arrested Development and Ugly Betty.

Roslyn Kind, the maternal half-sister of Barbra Streisand, told Variety in a statement that she remembers meeting Cort vividly.
“I was only fourteen when I met Bud at the backstage door at my sister’s play,” Kind shared in a statement. “He was majoring in art at the time in high school. We became close friends who shared our interest in entertainment. When I got married, Bud and our songwriter friend, Bruce Roberts, wrote a special song that was performed at the ceremony. His unique spirit will always be with me.”
The Film Transcends Time
While one watch of Harold and Maude makes it clear it's a film straight out of the '70s, the cult classic has remained a coming-of-age film that applies to anyone.
"Harold and Maude is the kind of cinema that draws you in for the storyline and keeps you there for the beating heart," The Guardian wrote during the film's 50th anniversary in 2021. "It’s a film unapologetically of its time – the wardrobe, cinematography, and Cat Stevens soundtrack place it firmly in the 70s – but its themes of joy and redemption resonate now more than ever."
