CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. — Trial proceedings are set to get underway in September for the seven people accused of torturing and killing Sam Nordquist, a transgender man originally from Minnesota, in Canandaigua.
The Ontario County District Attorney’s Office says there will be more than one trial. At least one trial is expected to begin in September and each trial is expected to last about a month.
What we know about the trial and future court appearances
Seven suspects — Precious Arzuaga, Jennifer Quijano, Kyle Sage, Patrick Goodwin, Thomas Eaves, Kimberly Sochia, and Emily Motyka — are currently awaiting trial. All are charged with first and second-degree murder, among other charges.
Attorneys met during a virtual scheduling conference on Wednesday ahead of the trial. All the defendants remain behind bars and there have been no changes to their bail statuses. There are also Ontario County Court appearances scheduled for April 22 and April 24 over severance motions and further trial scheduling. Those court appearances will require the defendants to be present.
First Assistant District Attorney James Nobles and Chief Assistant District Attorney Sara Van Strydonck will prosecute the case. The DA’s office says it has contacted Nordquist’s family with the latest details on the scheduling.
More about Sam Nordquist
New York State Police say 24-year-old Nordquist endured “prolonged physical and psychological abuse” for over a month at Patty’s Lodge Motel in Canandaigua. Police found Nordquist’s body in a field in Yates County on Feb. 13.
Nordquist’s family told News10NBC that he traveled from Minnesota to Canandaigua in September of that year to meet his girlfriend, Precious Arzuaga, who he connected with online. Nordquist’s family reported him missing on Feb. 9 after they lost contact with him and police found his body three days later. Arzuaga is among those charged.
Nordquist’s family has been keeping his memory alive. This week, News10NBC spoke with Sam’s mother, Linda Nordquist, and his sister, Kayla Nordquist, who wants to make sure his name is never forgotten.
“I believe Sam is still here and is waiting until he gets his justice. We are his voices. We are going to continue to speak, and the more time goes on, the louder we’re going to get,” Linda said.
There have been multiple vigils across the Rochester area and in Minnesota to honor Nordquist.
