Australian snowboarder Cam Bolton took a nasty fall during a training mishap at the Winter Olympics this week, and despite reportedly walking away from the crash, he later had to be airlifted from the mountain.
The accident came just days before he was set to compete in the Milan Cortina Games in snowboard cross Thursday.
The Australian Olympic Committee confirmed Tuesday that Bolton, and teammate Misaki Vaughan, who was slated to compete in the snowboard halfpipe, were “injured in training and forced to withdraw from the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.”
“We wish them well in their recovery and hope to see them out on course again soon,” the committee wrote on social media.
According to NBC Olympics, the AOC reported Bolton suffered the injuries on Monday, but reported worsening pain on Tuesday and was airlifted to an area hospital.
The reports said a scan at the Olympic Polyclinic found two neck fractures.
“Cam is in a stable condition and remains in good spirits,” the AOC reportedly said in a statement on Wednesday. “The Australian Olympic medical team is working with local doctors and neuro specialists in Australia to determine next steps for further assessment and treatment.”
The injuries aren’t the only ones so far these Games, particularly for snowboarders.
Chinese snowboarder Liu Jiayu took a scary fall in Olympic halfpipe qualifying Wednesday and had to be carried off on a stretcher.
The moment came after Jiayu came down hard on her left arms and shoulder, then bent backward and somersaulted through the bottom of the pipe.
There was no immediate word from the Chinese team on Liu’s status.
Arguably the most publicized injury so far involved legendary U.S. skier Lindsey Vonn, who suffered a tragic crash just seconds into her first race and broke her leg.
Vonn said she sustained a “complex tibia fracture that is currently stable but will require multiple surgeries to fix properly” after her devastating crash in the Olympic downhill.
