Spire Swim Club’s Minh Hoang has committed to the University of Utah for the fall of 2026.
I am excited and humbled to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic journey at the University of Utah. I want to thank my parents first for all their support and guidance. I also want to thank Coach Thad, Coach Molly, Coach Paul, and all my teammates at SPIRE for always pushing me and believing in me. I’m also grateful to all my coaches in Vietnam for helping me become who I am today and supporting me from the very beginning. Lastly, I want to thank Coach Jonas and Coach Jos for giving me this amazing opportunity. Go Utes!!!
Hoang hails from Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, but has spent the past year competing in the US with Spire Institute. He qualified for the Speedo Winter Junior Championships in Indianapolis in December, where he raced the 100 and 200 butterfly events, clocking 49.16 and 1:47.48. He set a few best times at the GWA Lake Erie Open in November, notching his fastest ever 200 fly (1:46.92) and 400 IM (4:02.56).
He also boasts a short course best time of 48.66 from January. Hoang also holds some middle-distance free skill with a 4:40.70 best 500 free time from the Jim Stacy Memorial Championships in December.
Hoang has represented his home nation at the Southeast Asian Age Group Swimming Championships, earning a pair of silvers in the 200 fly at ages 14 and 15. He was also named to the Vietnam National Team and competed at the 11th Asian Age Group Swimming Championships, finishing 7th in the 200 fly for the 15-17 age group.

With his best times, he would have qualified for the ‘B’ final in the 200 fly, placed 29th in the 100 fly, and 36th in the 500 free at those championships.
Hoang is an immediate scoring threat for the Utah men and would fit well into this season’s roster, where his 200 fly would be 4th, behind current senior Evan VanBrocklin, junior Jakub Walter, and Junior Kelson Flynn. With the 200 fly room leaving on the older side, Hoang immediately becomes a top contributor and stays atop the roster for multiple years to come.
Hoang joins Luan Barnard in the Ute men’s 2026 recruiting class.
