SAN DIEGO – Former NBA center Chris Dudley, a Torrey Pines High School graduate and long-time area resident, announced on Jan. 26 that he is running for Oregon governor for a second time, aiming to unseat Democratic incumbent Tina Kotek.
In a video announcing his campaign, Dudley emphasized that he would focus on practical solutions rather than partisan conflict.
“Oregon faces real challenges,” he said. “But instead of finger-pointing or fear-mongering, we need results. People deserve better.”
A Republican, Dudley previously won his party’s nomination in 2010 but narrowly lost to Democrat John Kitzhaber.
Oregon has not had a Republican governor since 1982.
At Torrey Pines, Dudley, a 6’11” center, scored 438 points as a senior, averaging nearly 17 per game. After his sophomore season, he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and went on to become the first active NBA player with the condition. He spent six seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers.
After his 2010 gubernatorial campaign, Dudley returned to North County. All three of his children were standout basketball players at Santa Fe Christian in Solana Beach.
Dudley’s 16-season NBA career has taken on new life online, particularly a March 1999 game against the Los Angeles Lakers. In the game, Shaquille O’Neal drove past him, dunked over him, and shoved him to the floor on landing.
Dudley got back to his feet, threw the ball in frustration at O’Neal, and unleashed a profanity-laced reaction that earned both players technical fouls — a clip that has become a viral favorite on social media.
His campaign platform emphasizes improving education, public safety, and affordability, while promoting economic growth. “I’ve traveled across Oregon and met people who share a commitment to these goals,” Dudley said.
Dudley enters a crowded Republican primary scheduled for May 19.
Marion County Commissioner Danielle Bethell, also seeking the nomination, responded to his announcement with pointed criticism.
“I appreciated Chris’ campaign in 2010, but Oregon is in a much different place today,” Bethell said. “When things have been tough, I didn’t move away — I worked to be part of the solution.”
Phil Knight, co-founder of Nike, was a major financial backer of Dudley’s 2010 campaign, though it is unclear if he will support Dudley again this year.
