Nearly 20 years after its previous installment, Universal's The Mummy franchise is kicking it into high gear with its latest update. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the long-awaited Mummy 4 has just been slated for a 2028 release date, spelling out a major step forward for the dormant horror adventure series.
As per THR, Universal has finally locked in the series' original two stars, Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, to return for the upcoming sequel. The film will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, collectively known as Radio Silence, whose previous films include V/H/S, Ready or Not and the most recent Scream films.
As the as-of-yet-untitled fourth Mummy movie gets underway, Universal has also confirmed the film's release date for May 19, 2028.
As fans of the original trilogy might recall, Fraser and Weisz first appeared in the franchise with 1999's The Mummy. Based on Universal's classic horror property of the same name, 1999's The Mummy followed a group of industrious adventurers and archaeologists excavating a cursed tomb in 1920s Egypt. After awakening a vengeful mummy in their explorations, the group races to reverse the curse and save the world from the creature's wrath.
A major commercial and critical success in 1999, The Mummy's popularity eventually paved the way for two sequels, 2001's The Mummy Returns and 2008's The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. While neither film managed to match the critical esteem of its predecessor, both managed to acquire a loyal fanbase, with a positive response geared toward Fraser's central performance in the franchise.
For the new sequel, Orphan: First Kill scribe David Coggeshall will provide the movie's screenplay, while The Mummy's original producer Sean Daniel returns for the new film. William Sherak, James Vanderbilt and Paul Neinstein will produce through their Project X Entertainment, with Fraser and Hivemind’s Jason F. Brown and Denis Stewart serving as executive producers.
