Metra trains in the south suburbs were suspended and some roads were closed Wednesday morning after a freight train derailment, with officials warning of “significant traffic congestion” as first responders and railroad crews respond to the scene.
The derailment, in Chicago Ridge, was impacting trains on Metra’s Southwest Service line, with multiple trains in and out of Manhattan not operating.
“Customers are encouraged to seek alternate transportation,” Metra said just before 6 a.m.
According to the Chicago Ridge Police Department, the train derailment occurred within village limits between Ridgeland and Central Avenues. Police said the derailment does not involve hazardous materials, and there is no danger to the public.
“As a result of the derailment, all Metra train service to and from Chicago Ridge has been suspended for an unknown amount of time,” police said. “Commuters are encouraged to seek alternate transportation and monitor Metra’s official channels for service updates.”
The derailment also led to road closures in the area, with Ridgeland Avenue closed between Southwest Highway and Washington Street. Central Avenue was also closed at the railroad tracks between 107th Street and Pleasant, police said.
“Motorists should expect significant traffic congestion in the surrounding areas and are encouraged to use alternate routes whenever possible,” police said. “Please avoid the area to allow first responders and railroad crews to work safely and efficiently.”
