Collin Sexton Fined $35K By the NBA for Flipping Off… What?

A five-game losing streak, out of play-in contention, and a whole lot of growing pains is not exactly the climate you want to plant a new team in. At the deadline, the Bulls bought in a bunch of new guys—Jaden Ivey, Collin Sexton, Nick Richards, Anfernee Simons, Rob Dillingham, Leonard Miller—dropped straight into a losing program. Since the guys have come in, the team is 0–3. So yeah, the frustrations have already started to rear their ugly head.

In the loss to the Brooklyn Nets, Sexton finished with 21 points and five rebounds, and even picked up a $35,000 fine from the NBA. Collin’s been in the league for years, so this feels like his official “Welcome to Chicago” moment, the kind we’ll be hearing about on podcasts long after he hangs it up.

    What did Collin Sexton Do?

Collin Sexton is a high-volume, high-scoring player. Which is NBA lingo for: he scores a lot… and misses a lot too.

In his first game with Chicago, Sexton shot 6-of-14 from the field—below his average percentage. In his second game, against the Nets, he was even worse: 7-of-18. That’s great news for a team like the Bulls, who might need a tank commander like him at the helm. But for him? It got frustrating.

Late in the third quarter, Sexton stepped to the free-throw line. He sank the shot, then celebrated—vented, really, by flipping it off. Not a player. Not a fan. Not even the referees.

    He flipped off the basket.

It was hilarious to watch, and honestly the most relatable thing I’ve ever seen an NBA player do. NBA Twitter ran with it immediately, and you just knew it was getting flagged for some kind of reprimand. There was hope he might slip under the radar with all the fights that unfolded around the league that night.

But as it turns out, he was first in line to get fined. According to NBA PR, Collin Sexton was fined $35,000 for “making an inappropriate gesture on the playing court.”

Before this, Sexton had only been fined twice in his career, both for flopping, $2,000 each. This is his third fine, and it’s 16 times bigger than anything he’s dealt with before tonight.

    Early Impressions on Sexton

Collin Sexton has officially played two games in a Bulls uniform, and that feels like the appropriate amount of time to form a completely rational overreaction.

In this deep guard rotation, he’s looked like he’s at the bottom of it. Right now, Josh Giddey, Tre Jones, Anfernee Simons, Jaden Ivey, and even Rob Dillingham all look like they have a place on this Bulls team long-term. Collin Sexton, on the other hand, might be advised not to unpack his bags or start house hunting. He could very well be a major trade chip in the offseason if Chicago decides it wants to try again next year.

However, he is an energy shifter. He is the “Young Bull,” and he plays like it. He gets the crowd involved. He keeps the building in the game. The United Center loves a guy who can do that, and Sexton absolutely can.

The Bulls are one of the NBA’s ethical tankers. They don’t try to lose; they just happen to. They play an exciting brand of basketball. So for now, he’s definitely something this team needs. The front office wants fans to feel like the product on the court is better than it actually is, and Sexton can absolutely upsell that.
