Video shows Aurora police officer kneeling on person amid student protest against ICE

Video circulating social media Tuesday appears to show an Aurora police officer kneeling on a person after over a thousand students walked out of schools in the area to protest immigration operations.

The video was recorded Monday afternoon after 1,500 students from several Aurora schools walked out of class around 11:50 a.m. to protest federal immigration operations.

An Aurora police officer can be seen kneeling on a person on the sidewalk while another person is dragged by a different police officer just a few feet away in the video.

Aurora police said three male juveniles who are students at East Aurora High School were charged with improper walking in the roadway, obstructing and resisting a police officer, and one was additionally charged with aggravated battery to a police officer.

Though the person being knelt on by the officer in the video appears to be wearing a backpack, NBC Chicago could not confirm if they are a student, or, more specifically, if they are one of the students who are facing charges.

Aurora police told Telemundo Chicago and NBC Chicago that videos “circulating publicly represents only a brief excerpt from a nearly two-hour-long incident.”

According to police, the walkout protest started peaceful but “later escalated in ways that created public safety concerns.”

“As students gathered and traveled together, officers provided repeated verbal direction intended to keep participants out of traffic and reduce the potential for conflicts or unsafe conditions,” Aurora Police Department said in a statement.

Officers “made repeated efforts to facilitate the protest safely and worked to gain voluntary compliance from students when they entered and remained in active roadways,” police said. “Students were given opportunities to move out of traffic and continue their demonstration in a safe manner. Those directives were refused.”

Later, officers observed water bottles being thrown at police vehicles, fights among students and reckless driving in close proximity of the crowd, police said.

“At that point, enforcement actions were determined to be necessary to restore safety and prevent further harm,” Aurora police said in a statement. “These decisions were not made lightly and were based on the totality of circumstances unfolding over an extended period of time.”

Officers identified two students “whose actions were contributing to the unsafe conditions” and took them into custody, police said. The students resisted as officers detained them and a third student intervened, at one point punching an officer in the head and causing a laceration, police said.

The injured officer was taken to a local hospital for medical attention, police added.

Police said the incident will be reviewed thoroughly, including all available video and documentation.

“The Aurora Police Department remains firmly committed to respecting the constitutional right to peacefully protest, including by students,” APD said in a statement. “That commitment, however, must be balanced with our responsibility to protect the safety of those participating, as well as the broader community.”

Dozens attended an emergency protest at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in front of the Aurora Police Department calling people to “stand with students” and “end ICE & police terror now” in response to the police activity at Monday’s protest.
