Orange County boys basketball Top 25: Santa Margarita is No. 1 going into playoffs

The Orange County boys basketball rankings as of Tuesday, Feb. 10.

Notable this week: Santa Margarita defeated St. John Bosco 57-56 last week in the final of the Trinity League Tournament.  JSerra defeated Mater Dei 87-66 in the third-place game. … San Clemente beat Tesoro, 69-65, to tie the Titans for the South Coast League championship. … Pacifica Christian beat Fairmont Prep, 50-46, to tie the Huskies for the San Joaquin League championship. … The playoffs begin Wednesday.

    BOYS BASKETBALL TOP 25

    (Records through Tuesday, Feb. 10)

    1. Santa Margarita 26-3: The Eagles beat St. John Bosco in the championship game of the first Trinity League Tournament. Drew Anderson scored 24 points and Brayden Kyman scored 20. Santa Margarita is in the field of eight teams in the Open Division of the CIF-SS playoffs. The Eagles are home against Damien on Wednesday.

    2. Crean Lutheran 21-7: The Saints did not play last week. They won the Crestview League championship with a 7-1 league record. Four of the league’s five teams have been in the county Top 15 all season. Crean Lutheran is seeded No. 1 in CIF-SS Division 1 and plays at home against Santa Barbara in the first round Wednesday.

    3. JSerra 19-12: The Lions finished third in the Trinity League Tournament. They lost to Santa Margarita, 84-56.  Godschoice Eboigbodin (6-6, 250) scored 46 points with 17 rebounds in a win over Mater Dei in the third-place game. JSerra is seeded second in CIF-SS Division 1 and has a home game in the first round Wednesday against Pasadena.

    4. Corona del Mar 27-1: The Sea Kings beat Newport Harbor, 59-51, to cap a 12-0 finish in the Sunset League. They were selected for the eight-team Open Division for the playoffs. Corona del Mar takes a 12-game winning streak into their home game against Crespi on Friday.

    5. Mater Dei 17-14: In their three Trinity League Tournament games last week, the Monarchs beat Orange Lutheran 92-65 before losing to St. John Bosco 72-66 and JSerra 87-66. Mater Dei was placed in Division 2 for the CIF-SS playoffs. The Monarchs have a first-round home game Wednesday against Burbank Providence.

    6. Orange Lutheran 18-9: The Lancers were eliminated in the first round of the Trinity League Tournament by a 92-65 loss to Mater Dei. Orange Lutheran opens the Division 1 playoffs with an away game against Arcadia.

    7. Los Alamitos 19-9: The Griffins beat Edison 68-61 in a Sunset League game last week. Los Alamitos finished second in the seven-team league with a 10-2 league record. Both losses were to Corona del Mar. The Griffins open the Division 1 playoffs with a home game against Loyola on Wednesday.

    8. La Habra 21-7: The Highlanders beat Canyon in their only game last week. La Habra finished second in the Crestview league with a 6-2 league record. The Highlanders are at home Wednesday against St. Bernard in the first round of the Division 1 playoffs.

    9. Cypress 18-10: The Centurions secured a playoff berth with two crucial wins in the Crestview League. The Centurions are the visiting team Wednesday when they play San Gabriel Academy in the first round of the Division 1 playoffs.
