PACIFIC BEACH – On Friday, Feb. 6, San Diego Honda Dealers offered a special Random Acts of Helpfulness event honoring senior student Yemaya Bruce for her work as a mental wellness advocate.
The event was in honor of Black History Month.
Bruce serves as a student liaison for the Mission Bay High Wellness Center and co-founded Mediums of Mental Health, a student-led initiative that provides education, creative outlets, and resources, while helping to destigmatize conversations around mental health.
The group recently launched “The Check-In,” a student-produced mental health-focused podcast, and has hosted community mental health fairs featuring art, poetry, and wellness activities.
The event recognized Bruce’s leadership and positive effects she has had on student mental health while surprising her and the Wellness Center with gifts, a visit from therapy dogs from Paws-to-Share, and more.
“As a woman of color, I understand the importance of representation and my role in shattering stereotypes, destigmatizing mental health, addressing health disparities, and being a voice for students who may not feel comfortable,” Bruce said.
Bruce is also president of the Kiwanis Key Club and a vocal soloist in the advanced jazz ensemble. Bruce plans to major in neuroscience with a minor in global health and pursue a career as a pediatrician, with a focus on public health policy and equitable access to care.
