Alabama drops close game on the road against 8-10 Texas A&M

No. 21 Alabama women’s basketball played a thriller on the road against 8-10 Texas A&M and left with a narrow 72-69 loss Sunday night.

“I think when you give up 17 offensive rebounds, that’s not a very good recipe for success,” head coach Kristy Curry said. “And when you put someone at the free throw line 31 times, that’s also not a very good recipe for success.”

The stat categories that Curry pointed out were indeed consequential — in a 3-point game, the Aggies won the second-chance points battle 15-11 and won the free throw battle 21-11. Those numbers could themselves be deemed the story of the game, as it was an otherwise closely fought affair in which both teams had to create separation at the margins. For Texas A&M, the advantage was in those small but crucial stats that Curry harped on.

Yet again, the Crimson Tide played a tight contest, with the largest lead for either team being a 5-point Aggie advantage at the half. Even with the closeness, however, Alabama was still playing at a deficit for most of the game. The team only led for 5:47 total across the entire 40 minutes, compared to Texas A&M’s 27:01.

“Credit Texas A&M. I just have no words,” Curry said. “We had an experience like this a couple weeks ago and felt like we had talked and done things differently with our travel plan to get their attention on a quick turnaround from Thursday.”

Alabama played in most facets of the game, enough to where the stats indicated a winning performance. Curry’s squad shot better from the floor, 42% to 38%; it shot better from 3, 47% to 18%; it won the defensive rebounding battle by two; and it had more assists.

When the team is able to win in those categories, it comes down to mishaps in other more minute areas to finish in defeat. In addition to the offensive rebounds and free throws Curry alluded to, the Crimson Tide lost the fast-break points battle 12-2. Those key components resulted in the team playing from behind most of the game.

Guards Jessica Timmons and Ta’Mia Scott led Alabama in scoring with 19 and 18, respectively, and forward Essence Cody logged 13 before fouling out. Timmons also grabbed eight rebounds to lead the team.

On the Aggie side, guard Ny’Ceara Pryor led the team and the game overall with 20 points, 13 of which she scored in the second half. Her jumper with a minute left made it 69-65 and forced Alabama to play catchup while Texas A&M shot free throws. In the end, the Crimson TIde had a chance to tie on a last-second shot, but a 3-pointer from guard Diana Collins didn’t fall.

Alabama now has another full week to recover and look forward to its next opponent. The No. 11 Oklahoma Sooners come to Tuscaloosa on Sunday, and that matchup will tip off at 3:00 p.m. CT on SEC Network.
