Scott Van Pelt is the latest to comment on Alabama‘s Charles Bediako after a judge ruled Monday that he can no longer play collegiate basketball.
Bediako filed a lawsuit against the NCAA to return to his Crimson Tide squad, a team he last played for during the 2022-23 season. In January, he was granted a temporary restraining order that allowed him to return to Alabama. Bediako played a total of 5 games, and Alabama went 3-2 over that span. On Monday, a judge denied Bediako’s motion for a preliminary injunction that would’ve allowed him to continue playing basketball for the Crimson Tide.
Here’s what SVP had to say about Bediako and college basketball:
“Nate Oats, the Tide’s head coach, said the system was broken and that they were just following the law,” Van Pelt said. “But they played Bediako because they got a favorable ruling initially, which meant they could, and just because you can doesn’t mean you should… The significance of this particular ruling is that a judge said no. The NCAA hasn’t had many wins like this in court. Perhaps it will lead to other judges doing the same. I just assume Alabama is going to appeal until a judge says yes.
“The product on the floor, as we saw again tonight in Arizona-Kansas, college basketball is awesome this year. It’s all the other stuff that’s just not great.”
