While the 2026 Winter Olympics won’t feature any events in the pool, the event is still sure to bring plenty of excitement across host cities Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo. SwimSwam will be bringing you updates of some of the major moments throughout the Olympics as we gear up in anticipation for 2028.

    Through day 4 of competition, 18 different countries have picked-up at least one medal, regardless of color. Of those countries, 8 have at least 1 gold medal accounted for, led by Norway with 3 golds, 1 silver, and 2 bronze for 6 total. Japan actually holds the most medals overall with 2 golds, 2 silvers, and 3 bronzes. The United States has picked up 2 gold medals thus far, their only medals of the competition.

    USA Adds First Medal Behind Breezy Johnson

    After teammate Lindsey Vonn suffered a serious leg injury on her run in the women’s downhill final for alpine skiing, American Breezy Johnson produced the race of her life to claim the gold medal and stand atop the podium. After missing the 2022 Olympics due to injury, Johnson picked-up the first gold medal for Team USA in any discipline at these Olympics, making her first career Olympic medal.

    Dutch Athletes Claim Speed Skating Podium in Dominant Fashion

    Known for their poweress in the speed skating events, the Dutch women did not disappoint in the 10,000 meter event as the duo of Jutta Leerdam and Femke Kok took home the gold and silver medals, respectively. Leerdam won the gold medal in a time of 1:12.31, setting a new Olympic Record in the process as both competitors bested the 3rd-place finisher by over a second.

    Women’s Slopestyle See Repeat Champion

    2022 Olympic Champion Mathilde Gremaud of Switzerland successfully defended her Olympic title in the slopestyle skiing event, taking down rival Eileen Gu of China by 0.38 points. Both athletes actually repeated their finishes from 2022, where Gu also just missed taking-down Gremaud in the event. Notably, Gu grew up in the United States and previously represented the US internationally before changing her sporting citizenship to China. She also currently attends aquatic powerhouse Stanford.

    Switzerland Posts 1-2 Finish in Men’s Team Skiing Event

    Led by Franjo von Allmen, who claimed his second gold of the Games with his team’s victory, Switzerland posted a 1-2  finish in the men’s alpine skiing combined team event. The event features teams of 2 competing in both the slalom and downhill events, with each athlete competing in one event. The final result of the event is determined based on the combined final times of both competitors. Von Allmen competed the downhill, combined with teammate Tanguy Nef in the slalom, to claim the gold for his country. The other Swiss team managed to secure the silver to contribute to the 1-2 finish, tying with Austria for the medal.

    USA Claims Gold in Team Figure Skating

    The team figure skating event proved to come down-to-the-wire between the USA and Japan, as predicted, with the USA coming out on-top due to a fantastic skate by Ilia Malinin in the final round of competition. With Japan holding the lead into the men’s singles, Malinin took-down Japanese rival Shun Sato by just over 6 points to give Team USA the victory in this event for the 2nd-straight Olympics.

    Olympic Medals Breaking

    In 2024, athletes were left disappointed when their Olympic medals showed signs of rusting and heavy wear mere days after winning them. Well, this year, Olympians seem to have their own set of issues with their medals as several athletes have posted photos and videos of them breaking including the aforementioned Johnson who told reporters in a press conference about her medal struggles.
