ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Hailey Winn from Rochester and Bishop Kearney scored her first career Olympic hockey goal Monday against Switzerland. One state lawmaker wants to bring Olympic hockey goals like that back to New York.
Assemblyman Robert Carroll from Brooklyn is leading an initiative to host the Winter Games in Lake Placid and New York City, similar to how Milan and Cortina are doing it in Italy. Carroll is traveling to Italy this week to learn from their experience.
Berkeley Brean, News10NBC: “Is this a miracle on ice idea or is it doable?”
Assemblyman Robert Carroll, Brooklyn, Kings County: “I think it’s a thousand percent doable.”
Carroll plans to explore how Milan and Cortina connect the two regions for the games.
Berkeley Brean: “Are you going to be looking for how that operation works to get ideas about how it might work here?”
Assemblyman Robert Carroll: “I’m going to be taking the train and then a bus from Milan to Cortina to see how connecting to those two regions, how it actually happens.”
Lake Placid and New York City are five hours apart, while Milan and Cortina are about four and a half hours apart.
Assemblyman Robert Carroll: “This is the first time two cities are hosting a games. So I think it’s a great opportunity to say – what does that feel like? What does that look like? Logistically how does that happen?”
The idea emerged after New York invested $500 million in upgrading Lake Placid’s facilities. Carroll wants the governor to establish a committee of about 30 to 40 people this spring to explore the feasibility of hosting the games “without breaking the bank or spending tax dollars on sports infrastructure.”
David Leggio, who played for the Amerks and the 2018 USA Hockey Team, supports the idea.
David Leggio, Team USA hockey 2018 Olympics: “I think it would be amazing. I just watched the 1980 documentary on Netflix which is fantastic.”
David Leggio: “Obviously all the infrastructure is there. I’m sure they could figure out the housing and lodging and all that but I think it would be awesome.”
The cost of the Olympics in Italy ranges from $1.9 billion to $2.5 billion, while New York’s state budget is $254 billion.
