The Greeley Fire Department responded to the Chinook Winds Apartments, 6622 10th St. at about 2 a.m., on the report of a fire alarm being activated, according to a Greeley news release. Crews found one person who had serious burns and took them to North Colorado Medical Center. Doctors there determined they needed to be airlifted to Swedish Medical Center in Englewood because the patient had second- and third-degree burns and signs of smoke inhalation, according to the release.
More details about the burn victim, such as their age and gender, were not included in the release.
The fire had been extinguished by the west Greeley apartment’s sprinkler system before firefighters responded to the second floor of the apartment building, where the fire began.
The sprinkler system was able to keep the fire from spreading further, according to the release, and firefighters conducted ventilation and other operations near the burned apartment. Two other residents of the apartment building have been displaced.
The fire remains under investigation, but initial findings indicate the fire may have been started because someone was smoking in bed.
