William and Kate know a royal reckoning on Epstein is coming

“Never complain, never explain.” The old royal mantra may have sufficed in the past. But it is no longer fit for purpose. And William and Catherine know that.

Voicing their deep concern for the victims of Jeffrey Epstein’s vile abuse is something they have probably long wanted to do. But they have allowed the King to lead.

King Charles and Queen Camilla expressed their abiding sympathy with the victims last year when the King stripped Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor of his titles. Last week, Prince Edward, somewhat awkwardly, answered a question about the Epstein scandal and voiced the same concern.

But the pressure has been growing – and continues to grow – for the Royal Family to do and say more. The questions are mounting about how much they knew about Andrew’s behaviour and his fawning friendship with a convicted paedophile. Did they know Epstein and his friends were invited to the Palace, or strolling around Balmoral or partying at Sandringham? Did anyone raise questions about various young women allegedly arriving at the Palace gates for a rendezvous with a prince?

A statement confirming that the latest revelations are as shocking and surprising to those at the Palace as they have been to the rest of us would not go amiss.

Even the late Queen’s judgement is now being queried. Of course she loved her second-born son – indeed, many say that Andrew was her favourite. And of course a mother would always want to believe and defend her child when they protest their innocence. But did that maternal love blind her to Andrew’s true character? Should she have taken steps to sack him long before his disastrous Newsnight interview?

As we approach the centenary of Queen Elizabeth II’s birth, it’s sad to see her legacy tarnished by the Epstein fallout. But the billionaire’s poisonous web has entrapped the reputation of an astonishing number of global figures; some, it may yet be proved, with good cause.

Since the release of three million pages of Epstein emails, every day has brought new allegations and revelations about the behaviour of Andrew. We now know that his friendship with Epstein was deep, dark and prolonged.

We can only imagine the shock and disgust with which members of his family read the avalanche of reports. Perhaps they felt that actions speak louder than words – and last week we saw Andrew unceremoniously booted out of his home under cover of darkness.

William’s feelings towards his uncle were made abundantly clear when he so publicly snubbed him at the Duchess of Kent’s funeral. But he probably wished he could voice those feelings loudly for all to hear. Now, in a joint statement with his wife, William has spoken of their deep concern about the “continuing revelations”. Note that they use the word revelations rather than mere allegations. And, of course, they emphasise that their thoughts remain focused on the victims – a sentiment that Andrew has so pointedly failed to address.

Undoubtedly, the statement was released today to stem the inevitable questions that would, and may still, be lobbed at William during his visit to Saudi Arabia this week. However, that should not detract from the sincerity of what was said.

But perhaps the time has now come for the royals to “complain” publicly to Andrew that his past behaviour, and indeed his present cocky attitude, is damaging the monarchy. And they should “explain” to him that unless he agrees to tell the American authorities all that he knows about Epstein, he cannot expect to be fed, watered and housed for life at his brother’s expense.
