A Newly-Aggressive Approach to Pitcher Development? Zombro, Rizzo, Hitters, and Other Cubs Bullets

The Super Bowl would’ve been a lot more exciting with the Chicago Bears in it. That’s not even just me talking as a Bears fan. It’s me recognizing the nature of Bears games this season …

Chicago Cubs VP of Pitching Tyler Zombro, who was elevated into that role this offseason, talked about the transition to professional ball for amateur prospects, and how quickly you’ve gotta take off if you’re going to stay on the radar:

"You'd better be ready to go when you get into Pro Ball." ?️Tread Performance Specialist and Cubs VP of Pitching @T_Zombro24 broke in our new podcast space to chat about the state of pitching in 2026. pic.twitter.com/qjynmNZ68w

    — Tread Athletics (@TreadHQ) February 6, 2026 That is some extreme candor from the guy in charge of pitching in the Cubs’ organization, so I think we need to really hear it. There are always exceptions, but, generally speaking, if a pitching prospect reaches 24/25 years old and is not in Double-A/Triple-A looking like a legitimate possible future big leaguer, the Cubs might pull the trigger more quickly going forward on moving on. Relatedly, we might see some of those older pitchers at the lower levels promoted more aggressively to try to stay on more of that kind of timeline (at the latest). I wonder how you coordinate with this concept the idea that you are really good as an organization at reclaiming guys who have either struggled in other organizations, dealt with injuries, etc. Most of those guys will be, by definition, much older than 24/25, and many of them do need time in the middle and upper minors to work through the things you want them to attack. So perhaps we’ll see the Cubs continue to be as – or maybe even more – aggressive on those kinds of developmental reclamation projects, because they have more space (by way of being more aggressive in moving on from guys internally who haven’t developed). Also interesting, as Zombro himself noted: the Cubs drafted several pitchers in 2025 who are ALREADY 24/25 years old, so I guess they’re going to have to move extremely quickly in 2026? It’s just going to be fascinating to see how this is handled in Zombro’s first year more fully in charge of the whole pitching chain for the organization, and also given the relative dearth of impact arms in the upper levels right now. The paths for rapid promotions should be wide open if the Cubs have a new philosophy in place, but obviously you don’t want to overwhelm prospects with more than they are prepared to handle. — Rob Friedman (@PitchingNinja) February 9, 2026 Speaking of Anthony Rizzo, NBC made it official with their announcement that he’ll join Clayton Kershaw and Joey Votto for pregame coverage this year (which I hope will include some things before the postseason):

    — NBC Sports (@NBCSports) February 8, 2026 Talking about “strikeouts are bad” and “bad defense hurts your value” as though those things are advanced analytics AND incorrect statements:

    — Foul Territory (@FoulTerritoryTV) February 7, 2026 A related bit of nonsense:

Geeks would hate Gywnn in todays game. Made to much contact. Moved guys over, was unselfish. I could go on and on things u cant put on a spreadsheet. t.co/V1IPu07XfR

    — Matt Stark (@BLocsports) February 8, 2026 Tony Gwynn had a career 132 wRC+. He had 8 individual seasons worth at least 4.0 WAR. The only hitters who reached 9000 PAs in his era and topped his .370 career wOBA were Bonds, McGriff, Palmeiro, Boggs, and Henderson. The geeks would’ve thought he was awesome. Because he was.
