ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Waking up to a frigid Monday morning with many towns dipping well below zero. ROC Airport has a low so far at -9 degrees. Coldest of the winter season but not close to the record which happens to be the coldest in recorded Rochester history at a whopping -22 set way back in 1934. A little good news is the brutal arctic cold will start to move out this week. The bad news is we will still have some wintry precip to deal with. No concerns for Monday as we see morning sunshine and then just a few clouds during the afternoon.
Looking ahead to Tuesday a warm front will cross the region. Initially the precipitation will be snow with amounts generally under an inch. Some concern for the afternoon as temperatures climb above freezing for the first time in over two weeks and a little sleet and freezing rain develops. The ground is so cold that any ice will quickly cause paved surfaces to become icy. Parking lots, sidewalks, driveways, bridges and secondary roads will become slick so be aware of that possibility later Tuesday.
On Wednesday we will be tracking a cold front later in the day that will drop temps a bit and kick up lake flakes off Ontario into Wednesday night and Thursday morning. At this time some accumulation looks likely so stay tuned for updates. For the weekend it looks pretty good on Saturday for Valentine’s Day. Watching Sunday for possible mixed precip and then the big story next week is for a couple days getting close to 40. Watch News10 for updates on the Tuesday ice and Wednesday lake effect.
