Florida reaffirmed its place spearheading the SEC and took sole possession of the top spot in the league for the first time since 2014 when it thumped Texas A&M 86-67 on Saturday night.
Outside of when the Aggies led 2-1 in the early moments, the Gators never trailed on their way to a statement win. Florida out-scored the home side in the painted area by a margin of 48-24, and they also tallied 21 fast-break points.
On3’s Zach Abolverdi transcribed Todd Golden‘s postgame radio show, and the fourth-year head coach was pleased with how his team used the off week leading up to a pivotal matchup like this one.
“I’m just really proud of our group, man,” Golden said postgame. “You know, we had all week to prepare for this game,” Golden said. “A lot on the line, clearly. The two top teams in the league, playing for first place, going into the back half of conference play. And I thought our guys did a great job for 40 minutes being mentally and physically tough.
However, Golden was quick to remind everyone that the SEC still features a host of teams that could make moves up the standings, as 9 squads boast 6+ conference wins yet none have more than 8.
“Obviously, we’re really pleased where we are right now, but as we discussed before the game, we got eight more league games left and a lot can happen,” Golden said. “There’s a lot of teams with three and four losses, and it’s all about us taking care of our business. We gotta take one game at a time, as cliche as that sounds,” Golden said. “And the great thing about being in this position is we don’t have to worry about anybody else. Just see what’s in front of us, one game at a time. And we’ll be ready to go against Georgia on Wednesday.
The Bulldogs will host the Gators at 7 p.m. ET on Wednesday, with the game being broadcast by ESPN2.
