First Alert Weather: Yellow alert stays up for wind chills; Improvement expected into Sunday afternoon

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Wind chills are still brutal throughout much of Western New York Sunday morning. Feel-like temperatures at the time of this article posting are still around -15 degrees at the Rochester airport and even lower into the Finger Lakes. Because of these lingering wind chills, a Yellow Alert is still up as of Sunday morning. This Yellow Alert will likely be dropped later Sunday morning as wind chills slowly improve into the afternoon. However, feel-like temperatures will still stay chilly between -5 and -10 degrees through the day. Air temperatures are expected to top out at 8 degrees on Sunday. Winds will still be breezy through the day, out of the northwest at 15 to 25 mph. Because of this cold arctic air and favorable mid-level wind direction, light lake snow is expected to hang on through the day with 1-2″ possible along and north of 104, and 2-3″ into Wayne County. East of Rochester, into Wayne County, is where this lake snow will hang on the longest. Rochester metro can expect around an additional 1″ of snow through Sunday.

Through Sunday overnight, dry air will start to work its way into all levels of the atmosphere and force the lake effect, east of Rochester, to taper off through the very early morning hours of Monday. Additionally, gusts will move out of the region Sunday overnight and wind speeds will lessen to 10 to 15 mph through Monday morning. However, the morning hours will still be very cold. Minimal cloud coverage will allow air temperatures to drop to -1 degree by early Monday morning and windchills may approach -10 to -13 degrees. Be sure to bundle everyone up heading out the door! Air temperature will reach a high of 17 degrees on Monday with wind chills improving in the latter half of the morning. Mostly dry weather will persist through Monday.

Tuesday morning, a warm front moves into Western New York and will likely deliver our first day above freezing since January 22nd. This warm front will likely bring snow showers in the morning with a brief moment of mixed precipitation behind it. The rest of the day looks uneventful besides persistent breezy conditions. Winds will likely stay between 15 and 20 mph with gusts possible above 30 mph at times. High temperatures on Tuesday will reach near 36 degrees. Snow showers are expected again Tuesday night as a cold front drops through the region. This front will likely drop temperatures on Wednesday back down into the upper-20s and bring lake effect snow through Thursday. It is still far out to call snow totals through Thursday, however, accumulations are looking fairly light-moderate at the moment.
