FORT COLLINS — Colorado State snapped a three-game losing streak with a 65-57 victory over San Jose State on Saturday at Moby Arena.
With the win, the Rams improved to 13-10 overall and 4-8 in the Mountain West Conference. They had lost eight of their previous 11 games prior to Saturday’s win over the Spartans.
Jevin Muniz led the way offensively for the Rams with 15 points. Rashaan Mbemba had 11 points to go along with 11 rebounds. The Rams got 36 points from their bench.
“We wanted to get them to the point of the bench helping us and them extending the lead,” CSU hear coach Ali Farokhmanesh said. “And tonight, I thought they didn’t only extend the lead, I thought they kept the lead. Really, the bench was kind of the ones playing in crunch time, too.
“And in an eight-point win, they all played the way we wanted to, and I hope that’s going to carry going forward for us. I really believe that. I think that that bench is going to be massive for us going forward.”
In a back-and-forth first half, CSU took its largest lead of the opening 20 minutes when a 3-pointer by Josh Pascarelli gave the Rams at 16-10 advantage. San Jose State battled back to tie the game at 22-22 before CSU took the lead for good when the Rams went up 24-22 on a layup by Mbemba that broke a 22-22 tie.
In the second half, the Rams led by as many as 10 points twice, the second time coming with 9:39 left in the game when a free throw by Mbemba gave them a 51-41 lead.
San Jose State got within three points in the game’s final minutes, but CSU was able to keep them from getting any closer.
CSU will be back in action Tuesday at Air Force.
