The Alabama Men’s Club Hockey team delivered a statement win Friday night, as they rallied past Auburn for a 3-2 victory in the Iron Cup matchup that drew the largest crowd in program history.
Auburn struck first, scoring in the first period before adding a second goal to take an early 2-0 lead. Alabama earned a power play later in the period but was unable to capitalize on it and headed into the first intermission facing a 2-0 deficit.
The drive shifted early in the second period when sophomore forward Tyler Zent scored to put Alabama on the board and ignited the crowd. Alabama ended the second period with a 2-1 score.
“I think whenever we play Auburn, the intensity just goes up a level,” senior center Austin Fink said. “We get our biggest crowd for this game, and that energy carriers into everything we do; Practices, workouts, all of it.”
Alabama carried that energy into the third period, where forwards Ryan Kavanagh and Angus Arnold tied it up at 2-2. Joey Petrich set up the game-winning sequence that gave Alabama the 3-2 lead, that they held throughout the third.
Alabama emphasized discipline and defensive structure, limiting Auburn’s scoring chances. Goaltender Perry Jacobs helped anchor the score with his glove saves and blocks, allowing the Frozen Tide to close out the 3-2 win in front of a record-breaking crowd.
The victory held significance after the early-season loss to Auburn, the first Iron Cup defeat in program history. That loss lingered with the players throughout the season.
“We’re definitely looking at this as a get-back game,” Fink said. “The rivalry runs deep here, and in hockey it shows through the physicality and pace of play. Every hit matters that much more.”
Despite an inconsistent record, Alabama has shown flashes of it’s potential through the season, including wins over ranked opponents and strong performances. Both Fink and Zent pointed to the team’s youth as a major storyline, as around 10 to 12 freshmen play most nights.
“They’ve got a lot of raw talent, but college hockey is a different game Seeing them grow into their roles and confidence has been huge for us,” Fink said.
Zent echoed that growth, pointing to the team’s ability to handle pressure, especially on the road.
“We went into Kentucky against a top-ranked team and handled a packed barn.” Zent stated in a phone interview. “That showed us what we’re capable of.”
As the season continues, Alabama hopes Friday’s comeback win serves as a blueprint while they move forward in the season.
The Frozen Tide will take on Auburn again Feb. 7 with puck drop set at 7 p.m. CST at the Columbus Civic Center in Columbus, Georgia.
