Star Trek: Starfleet Academy star Kerrice Brooks wasn't all that interested in the Star Trek franchise while growing up.
During a February 2026 interview onThe Kelly Clarkson Show, alongside fellow Star Trek: Starfleet Academy stars Holly Hunter, George Hawkins, and Sandro Rosta, Brooks said that she "tried not to" watch Star Trek. The Prom star explained that she "was trying to be like one of those punk rock kids."
"If my family liked it, then I wasn't gonna like it. So it took me a long time to watch [Star Trek]. Like, genuinely, it took me a long time to watch that," said Brooks during the interview.
In addition, Brooks, who plays a hologram SAM (Series Acclimation Mil), also said she initially wasn't sure if she'd "see [herself] represented on the screen" when watching a Star Trek show or film.
"And then when I saw Sonequa [Martin-Green]in the Toni Braxton wig," continued Brooks, in reference to Martin-Green's character, Michael Burnham, in Star Trek: Discovery.
Kerrice Brooks Shared Which Past 'Star Trek' Characters Inspired SAM
During the Kelly Clarkson Show interview, Brooks shared some information about her character on Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, which premiered in January 2026.
"She is a hologram, she's the first of her kind. She's at this school. She's essentially created to kind of like be a spy for our home world, to let them know if it's safe or not, and then report back to my people and say, 'Stay away from him. He has allergies,'" quipped Brooks during the interview.
While speaking to Comic Book Resources in January 2026, Brooks shared which past Star Trek character inspired her portrayal of SAM. Brooks said that Emergency Medical Hologram, known as The Doctor, played by Robert Picardo, in Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, was a source of inspiration. In addition, Brooks "drew from" the characters Seven of Nine, played byJeri Ryan, the younger version of Jake Sisko, played by Cirroc Lofton in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and the famed Vulcan, Surak.
