Olympics 2026: Officials Address Claims Ski Jumpers Are Injecting Acid Into Their Ahem Areas

The Olympics are a breeding ground for scandal. Whatever miniscule advantage an athlete can get over their competitors, they’ll take -- sometimes even if it’s illegal. The Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026 are no different.

They’re calling it Penisgate, and it’s by far the very last controversy we ever thought would dominate headlines. But here we are.

Apparently, Bild, a German tabloid, claimed back in January that some male ski jumpers might be injecting hyaluronic acid into their genital areas to fly further at the Olympics, because in this instance, yes, size actually does matter.

According to NBC 4 Los Angeles, increased bulk results in a bigger ski suit, which then affects the aerodynamics and a ski jumper’s glide time in the air. “A larger suit means extra fabric to catch air like a sail and prolong a ski jumper’s flight,” the outlet explained.

But don’t take only their word for it. There have been studies done on this stuff. In one such paper, done by the scientific journal Frontiers, researchers found that 2 centimeters of added “bulk” could add up to 6 meters to the length of a jump. That could mean the difference between silver and gold.

Due to the speculation, officials have been forced to respond.

“This wild rumor started off a few weeks ago from pure hearsay,” FIS spokesman Bruno Sassi told The Associated Press, per ESPN. “There has never been any indication, let alone evidence, that any competitor has ever made use of a hyaluronic acid injection to attempt to gain a competitive advantage.”

The HLA doping news comes as ski jumping is healing after another cheating scandal. Last year, Norwegian team leaders were caught on camera manipulating ski suits at the World Championship in Trondheim, Norway. The coaches were banned from the sport for 18 months, while their ski jumpers accepted three-month suspensions. Both are competing this year in the Winter Games.

In the wake of that scandal, ski jumpers are now required to be measured via 3D body scanners while wearing “elastic, body-tight underwear.” According o ESPN, there are also microchips in their suits designed to prevent any inch gaining.

Hylaurinic acid, a legal substance commonly used in cosmetic and medical treatments, is not banned by anti-doping rules and is said to increase, or plump, the circumference of the genitals when injected.

Asked about the Bild claims in at a press conference at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, WADA director general Olivier Niggli said, “I am not aware of the details of ski jumping, and how that could improve performance.” He said this while holding back some chuckles.
