The Riordan boys basketball team continues to wait to return to the court after a tuberculosis outbreak led to multiple postponements and an opponent forfeiting a rescheduled game.
A scheduled game between Riordan and St. Francis that was set to take place on Friday was forfeited by the Mountain View school, Riordan coach Joey Curtin told the Bay Area News Group. Curtin also said he was informed that Bellarmine plans to forfeit a rescheduled game on Saturday.
Riordan is scheduled to play at Archbishop Mitty on Tuesday — a game Curtin said he expects to go on.
“We’ll probably play Mitty on Tuesday, they said they’ll play that game,” Curtin said. “I haven’t heard any wishy, washy stuff so I’m looking forward to playing on Tuesday.”
According to Curtin, the West Catholic Athletic League recently cleared games to go on between Riordan and its scheduled opponents. Curtin said his team has been getting testing and that none of his players contracted tuberculosis.
The Riordan girls basketball team played for the first time in 11 days on Friday, traveling to St. Francis. Curtin said Riordan’s wrestling team is also back to competing.
It’s been an odd week for Curtin’s team, which came off a thrilling win over St. Ignatius the last time the group was on the floor.
Curtin said there has been growing frustration for his team, which will be sidelined two full weeks if it plays on Tuesday.
“My players are pretty upset,” Curtin said. “It’s going to be two weeks before we even step on the floor and that’s going to be an adjustment.
“The boys feel singled out and they’ve done nothing wrong. None of them have been sick and they’ve done everything we’ve asked them to do. We feel like we were ahead of this even before the postponements happened. They’re just bummed out right now.”

With the Central Coast Section playoffs starting on Feb. 20, Curtin said the WCAL has been in talks with the CCS about the effect forfeits and rescheduled games could have on the Crusaders’ seeding placement.
“Our league commissioner is having constant conversations with the CCS and CIF,” Curtin said. “I don’t think it will affect our seeding at the end of the day.”
