First Alert Weather: Dangerous cold, whipping snow across the region today

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – It is likely to be the harshest day of the winter season so far today. Extremely cold wind chills down to -30 degrees are possible in some areas, and lake snow/blowing snow will leave roads slick and visibility reduced. We have a Red Alert for counties south of the Thruway where conditions are most harsh… Yellow Alert for elsewhere.

Temperatures near zero and winds gusting around 35 MPH will create wind chill values -15 to -20 north this morning, and subzero temperatures down south mean wind chills will range from -20 to -30… Enough to cause frostbite to exposed skin in 10-15 minutes. If you need to go outside, limit your time and dress properly as there is a high risk of frostbite and hypothermia today. Keep your pets inside too.

Arctic wind off of Lake Ontario will bring in localized fluffy snow, with the highest totals being along the lakeshore. Amounts will be manageable today, but we recommend waiting to shovel until tomorrow when wind chills are less brutal. Winds will pick snow up off the ground and throw it around, reducing visibility and recoating cleared surfaces even if there’s a break in the actual snowfall. Be very cautious on the roads today as there will be many slick spots.

Temperatures remain in the single digits tomorrow, but the wind will calm down. Wind chills will still be subzero but should be less dangerous than today. Lake snow will also continue, eventually focusing in on Wayne County, and by the end of Sunday the highest snowfall totals will be along rt 104 where 7-10″ of fresh fluffy snow is possible. These amounts will be highly localized however, so they are not a guarantee. Snowfall amounts taper down as you go south, with the exception of some higher elevation areas. We will continue to monitor the snow and will change snowfall total forecasts over the course of the day, so stay tuned.

Much less harsh temperatures are in store for us next week, and current trends suggest we may even see above average temperatures at times the week after next. Here’s hoping those trends stick around…
