ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Frigid and harsh winter conditions will persist into the weekend. A Red Alert is posted for areas south of the Thruway, where the air will be coldest. Wind chills there will drop between -20 to -20 at times Saturday morning into the early afternoon. A Yellow Alert remains up for counties north of the Thruway, where it will still be dangerously cold, but not quite to the extent of areas farther away from the lake.
Regardless of where you live, prepare for the cold if you’re venturing out this weekend. This is particularly the case if you’re spending time outdoors shoveling snow, or walking the dog whatever you may choose. If you plan on being outside for long, make sure you have gloves, hats, scarves – basically try to cover as much exposed skin as possible. Frostbite can begin to set in in 10-15 minutes on exposed skin. Bottom line – just be prepared for the conditions if outdoors this weekend.
Snow will be another facet of our weather this weekend, particularly for our northern counties. An arctic front plows through Friday night, dropping our air temperatures to near zero by Saturday morning. Winds whip out of the northwest 15-30mph with gusts to 40mph at times. This frigid airmass settling in will encourage lake effect snow off of Lake Ontario Friday night and likely not wrapping up until Sunday. There will be a big range of snowfall from south to north. Areas south of 5&20 will see a couple inches of snow. Roughly the 5&20 corridor north to the city will see a 3-6″ accumulation, and areas north of the city could see snowfall pushing 9-10″ of snow, with a few higher pockets. Bottom line: the closer you live to Lake Ontario, generally speaking the higher the snowfall amounts through Sunday.
