Michelle Yeoh is everything everywhere all at once, once again.
News just dropped that the EEAAO star is headlining another multiplayer film, this one premiering at the Berlin Film Festival on Feb. 13. Directed by Sean Baker, whose film Anora won the best picture Oscar last year, Sandiwara stars Yeoh in not one, not two, but five different roles. But that's only the beginning of the story.
A collaboration with Self-Portrait -- yes, Self-Portrait as in the London-based fashion house A-listers like Catherine, Princess of Wales, have made a household name -- Sandiwara is the first film out of the brand's residency program. Launched last year, the Self-Portrait Residency Prograam invites creatives “from all disciplines into the brand to design using their own distinctive style” and to use the brand’s “infrastructure, platforms, resources, teams and distribution network to spotlight and promote external creatives, offering them the freedom to dream and create.”
The film collaboration also marks Baker’s return to shooting movies with just an iPhone. Fans of Baker will remember fondly Snowbird and Tangerine, both guerilla-style filmmaking the Prince of Broadway director shot with his smartphone.
Per Variety, which first reported on the Sandiwara back in December, Sandiwara will be quite “an immersive cinematic experience.”
Starring Yeoh as five different characters, the film is set in a Malaysia night market and “moves beyond fashion and into the world of cinema and storytelling to capture the heart of Malaysian culture,” the synopsis reads. With a title borrowed from the Malay word meaning “drama, theatrical performance or play,” Sandiwara unfolds through each character’s own unique story.
Rumor has it, the film will run about a half or so – so, short film? – but we’ll have to wait for its premiere at Berlinale before we know for sure. At the festival, Baker will also present Yeoh with the Honorary Golden Bear for Lifetime Achievement.
The Berlin International Film Festival runs Feb. 12 through 22.
