Seven years ago, Greeley resident Theo Gould and his family got their two dogs, Phoebe and Pearl, from Big Bones Canine Rescue in Windsor.
Now 15, the homeschooled student is using his unique talents to give back to the nonprofit.
“I really love my dogs a lot,” Gould said. “What (Big Bones Canine Rescue) is doing is special to me, and I’d like to support that.”
In addition to being a dog lover, Gould is an avid pianist. Since he was 3, Gould’s mother, Robyn Fall, has taught him how to play.
On Saturday, Gould will blend his devotion to dogs and passion for piano by putting on a benefit recital for Big Bones Canine Rescue. The performance begins at 3 p.m. at First Congregational Church, 2101 16th St., in Greeley.
Admission is free, and a representative from Big Bones Canine Rescue will be in attendance to speak about the nonprofit and help collect any donations. Gould hopes to raise $2,000 for the rescue.
“He has been a dog lover since he was a baby,” Fall said. “He’s always gravitated to dogs from Day 1.”
Big Bones Canine Rescue is run by volunteers, so all of the donations go directly to supporting the animals. The funds raised will go toward food, medicine, surgeries, veterinarian bills, transportation, equipment and other necessary expenditures.
Bob Bellamy, a volunteer for the rescue, said the dogs they help come from all sorts of different backgrounds.
“We’re all just trying to help them find a new chapter in life,” he added.
Donations will be accepted in the form of cash or checks at the recital. People may also donate to the Venmo found on the nonprofit’s website, bigbonescaninerescue.com.
Gould is set to perform pieces he’s memorized by composers including Frédéric Chopin and Johann Sebastian Bach, with the performance lasting about 40 minutes. A reception will follow the performance.
“He has been practicing so much,” Fall said. “This is all his idea … He has a big heart, and he wants to help this amazing organization. I’m super proud.”
