T20 World Cup 2026: Coast clear for India to defend title, Pakistan could make it tough for themselves

The T20 World Cup 2026 is finally here. Since the last tournament a lot has changed; geo-political scenario in the world has given a new twist to the tournament, but then the goal for every team remains the same. Bangladesh have withdrawn from the WC and there is no clarity if the IND vs PAK match will happen or not, but there is still a title to be won.

The World Cup commences with IND vs USA, PAK vs NED and WI vs SCO, that would set the tone for others. As per the format, only two teams from a group of 5 will proceed to the Super 8s. That, in a way, gives a chance to the lesser teams to go through as well.

Group A – India favorites, Pakistan could suffer setback

Teams: India, Pakistan, USA, Netherlands, Namibia

Look, expect India to win all the matches here, and Pakistan as well, But where does the problem arise. Firstly, IND vs PAK match is in doldrums for the moment. What could make it tricky for Pakistan is, their match on Feb 7 could all be washed out in Colombo, due to rain. If that doesn’t happen, they will go through for sure.

They have compiled an excellent squad, with their spinners giving them the edge. Skipper Salman Ali Agha is in excellent form. But their worry could be the pacers. Shaheen Shah Afridi’s form is uncertain.

Group B – Australia should go through, Zimbabwe dark horses

Teams: Australia, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Ireland, Oman

This is one group where it would be foolish to predict anything. Just with their sheer prowess Australia should be the contenders, but recent whitewash against Pakistan was not confidence-inducing. Similar is with Sri Lanka. They are quite unpredictable too. But one must watch out for Zimbabwe, who with Sikandar Raza, Blessing Muzarbani , Brendar Taylor and Bennett can pull off an upset or two.

Group C – Don’t expect much from West Indies

Teams: England, West Indies, Italy, Nepal, Scotland

There is not much competition for England in the group. Pretty straightforward for them for now. That said, it could be a tough battle between West Indies and the others for a Super 8 place. You know, WI have gone without their star T20 player again, so to expect anything is futile.

They are the side who lost to New Zealand last year, and also two Nepal twice. 0-4 against the Aussies happened too. Other than that, they lost series against England. So, the less said the better.

Group D – As tough as it gets

Teams: South Africa, New Zealand, Afghanistan, UAE, Canada

This has to be the group of death. A loss for any of the teams, and it could be curtains for them early in the T20 World Cup. SA, NZ and AFG; there isn’t much to separate. Yes, Afghanistan cannot be called minnows anymore. Had reached the last semis as well. They would like to make amends to what had happened to them in the semis though, where they were bundled out for 56 only.
