Known for her perfect vocals, Karen Carpenter once worried her voice was too “husky” on two Carpenters hits.
In a 2022 interview with Goldmine Magazine, her brother, Richard Carpenter, revealed that his sister wasn't happy with her vocals on two songs on the band's 1969 debut LP, Offering. Offering was eventually repackaged and re-released in 1970 with a new cover and title, Ticket to Ride, after their Beatles' cover of the same name.
When asked which song he would love to sing one more time with his sister, the songwriter shared a surprising revelation. He said the duo had considered re-recording two tracks from their debut album.
"There are two that, had she lived, we were going to redo because she was only 19 when we did our first album, and I was 22. In the next two to three years that followed, our voices changed in that they weren’t as husky as they were originally," he explained.

"That’s why she wanted to redo the lead on 'Merry Christmas, Darling' and 'Ticket to Ride,' the remix from ’73, because she wasn’t all that wild about how husky her voice was. So there were two that happened to be Bettis/Carpenter songs, and one that she wanted to redo."
He revealed, "One of them was 'Eve' and that’s a cut on the first album. Actually, the other one was also on the first album, which is called 'Someday.' She mentioned it several times. She wanted to redo them, and I wanted to redo them as well."
Carpenter added that if he had the opportunity to spend more time with his sister, he would heap praise on her for her vocal abilities. They would also record one last song together.
"Well, I would once again let her know just how damn great a singer she was," Carpenter admitted. "One of the songs I would do with her would be 'But Beautiful.' It’s from one of the Bing Crosby road pictures and went on to be a standard."
Karen Carpenter died on February 4, 1983. She was 32.
