A Russian general has been shot in an apparent assassination attempt Moscow.
Lieutenant General Vladimir Alexeyev was taken to hospital after being shot at several times in the Russian capital on Friday morning, state media reported.
“According to investigators, on 6 February in a residential building located on Volokolamskoe Highway in Moscow, an as-yet-unidentified individual fired several shots at a man and fled the scene. The victim was hospitalised in a city hospital,” a spokeswoman for Russia’s Investigative Committee, Svetlana Petrenko, told RIA Novosti.
The Moscow Prosecutor’s Office is investigating and a search for the shooter is under way. Investigators and forensic experts are reviewing CCTV footage and interviewing eyewitnesses, Petrenko added.
Alexeyev is deputy chief of the Main Directorate of the General Staff at the Defence Ministry (GRU). He was awarded the title Hero of the Russian Federation for his “courage and heroism, shown in the execution of military duty” in the Syrian civil war.
He is the latest high-ranking military figure to have been targeted in Moscow since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
He was sanctioned by the European Union sanctions after the GRU was accused of being behind a 2018 nerve agent attack in Salisbury in the UK.
When the Russian mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin staged a short-lived mutiny in June 2023, Alexeyev was one of the top officials who were sent to negotiate with him.
Several senior Russian military officials have been assassinated deep inside the country since the start of the war in Ukraine, with Moscow blaming the attacks on Kyiv.
Ukraine has not yet commented on the shooting. Kyiv has claimed responsibility for some previous attacks.
In December Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, head of the operational training directorate of the Russian military, was killed after a bomb exploded under his car in Moscow.

Last April Lieutenant General Yaroslav Moskalik, a deputy head of the main operational department in the General Staff, was also killed by a car bomb near his apartment building in the capital.
In December 2024 Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, the chief of the military’s nuclear, biological and chemical protection forces, was killed by a bomb hidden on an electric scooter outside his apartment block.
