What Are the Bears Getting in New RBs Coach Eric Studesville?

The Tribune’s Brad Biggs reports the Chicago Bears are hiring Eric Studesville as their new running backs coach. Studesville, along with Duce Staley, was one of the known candidates for the job. It appears that the search to replace Eric Bieniemy was a short one, as the Bears land on Studesville about 10 days after it was first reported to be someone to keep an eye on for this gig.

Even though Eric Studesville’s hiring isn’t officially official just yet, this feels like a good time to get to know the newest Bears assistant.

    Eric Sudesville’s coaching history

    NFL COACHING EXPERIENCE

Chicago Bears, 1997-2000 (Offensive quality control coach and offensive assistant, Wide receivers coach and assistant special teams coach) New York Giants, 2001-03 (Running backs coach) Buffalo Bills, 2004-09 (Running backs coach, running back game coordinator) Denver Broncos, 2010-2017 (Running backs coach, interim head coach in 2010) Miami Dolphins, 2018-2025 (Running backs coach and run game coordinator, co-offensive coordinator, associate head coach)

    The Ben Johnson connection

Ben Johnson made it a point to not hire his friends in Year 1 as a head coach. Johnson made it clear how much he valued different perspectives and personalities. And while I don’t think Johnson will hire his buddies for the sake of familiarity, I do think we will see him tap into his past as we move forward with his tenure as Bears head coach.

With that being said, Eric Studesville has a connection with the NFL Coach of the Year finalist that dates back to their time in Miami. Studesville was the Dolphins run game coordinator from 2017-20, meaning that he spent two seasons coaching alongside Johnson when he was an assistant wide receivers coach (2017) and wide receivers coach (2020). Sometimes, who you know can be as important as what you know. Between Studesville’s history as a running backs coach and previous ties to Johnson, you don’t have to squint to see how this hire makes sense.

The other notable link is Studesville’s coaching experience under Mike McDaniel. Johnson raved about McDaniel’s run-game scheme last summer and spoke glowingly about the then-Dolphins head coach. So perhaps it shouldn’t come as a surprise that McDaniel’s former running backs coach is headed to Chicago.

    1,000-yard rushers

Kudos to Jacob Infante, who shares a list of running backs who have had 1,000-yard seasons while Eric Studesville was their position coach:

Tiki Barber, New York Giants (2002, 2003) Willis McGahee, Buffalo Bills (2004, 2005) and Denver Broncos (2011) Marshawn Lynch, Buffalo Bills (2007, 2008) Fred Jackson, Buffalo Bills (2009) Knowshon Moreno, Denver Broncos (2013) Raheem Mostert (2023) De’Von Achane (2025)

Getting 1,000-yard rushing seasons from seven different guys is neat. Coaching up Willis McGahee 1,000-yard campaigns for two different teams is pretty cool and is the type of thing that could win you a bar bet when you’re out with your friends. Looking at this list took me into a Time Machine. Where were you when Fred Jackson saved your fantasy season in 2009? Who remembers Marshawn Lynch’s Buffalo Bills days? Raheem Mostert was a former Bears running back. People forget that!

In addition to coaching 1,000-yard backs, some of the work Eric Studesville did in multi-pronged backfields is notable. For instance, he got Mostert and De’Von Achane to combine for 2,184 scrimmage yards for the 2023 Dolphins. In 2015, Broncos running backs Ronnie Hillman and C.J. Anderson combined for 1,866 scrimmage yards and 12 touchdowns. Considering Chicago’s running back situation and Johnson’s penchant for deploying two backs, I imagine Studesville will be tapping into his past.

    In the end…

The feeling around this position group is different now than it was at this time last year. Heck, it is vastly different now compared to when the season kicked off. Chicago’s football team went from having an offense where the ground game was a question-mark to one that had arguably the best rushing attack in the NFL. And they did it with a seventh-round rookie who wasn’t atop anyone’s wishlist and a veteran whose fit with a new-look coaching staff was in doubt. Now, Kyle Monangai (looking build on a productive rookie campaign and D’Andre Swift (who is entering a contract year) have to prove themselves to a new coach.

With that being said, I am curious to see how Eric Studesville molds the Bears running backs room. Aren’t you?
