According to SlashFilm, Michaels' comments came during an episode of Saturday Night Live in 1992 when then-host Nicolas Cage wondered aloud if he was "the biggest jerk who's ever been on the show."
In response, Saturday Night Live's creator reassured Cage by saying, "No, no. That would be Steven Seagal."
Michaels' assessment of Seagal's disastrous one-time stint as SNL guest host goes hand in hand with many different cast members' similarly dismissive attitude towards Seagal.
According to multiple cast members who worked at SNL at the time, Seagal's proposed ideas for sketches mostly involved him beating up various stunt doubles, seemingly illustrating his on-screen tough guy persona.
"When we pitched some of our ideas for Seagal at our Monday meeting, he gave us some of his own sketch ideas," cast member Julia Sweeney remembered. "And some of his sketch ideas were so heinous, so hilariously awful, it was like we were on Candid Camera."
David Spade echoed Sweeney's sentiments, stating, "A lot of people think we're there to make fun of them. But if we're getting you on the show to host, we all want it to work. And if you make fun of yourself — this is where it gets tricky — if you make fun of yourself, it will benefit you. And if you don't, and if you fight it so much — that was [Seagal]. He was too cool and had his image."
"He just wasn't funny and he was very critical of the cast and the writing staff," Tim Meadows said of Seagal. "He didn't realize that you can't tell somebody they're stupid on Wednesday and expect them to continue writing for you on Saturday."
