The Mission League boys basketball tournament championship game between Sierra Canyon and Notre Dame was canceled out of respect for a Sierra Canyon student who died early Wednesday morning from a car accident.
Local news reports confirmed the student’s car was found down a large embankment off of Malibu Canyon Road near Pepperdine University. Los Angeles County firefighters responded to the mangled vehicle resting in thick brush near Potter Drive. Crews descended the hillside and found a person inside the vehicle, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sierra Canyon Head of School Jim Skrumbis issued a statement to the school community. Here is a portion of the message:
“It is with a very heavy heart that I share the tragic news that a student of our Upper Campus community died earlier this morning in a car accident. My deepest sympathies are with the family as they navigate an unimaginable loss, and I know our entire community will join me in holding them in our thoughts and prayers. Out of respect for the family’s privacy, we will not be sharing additional details.”
The game was scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday night at Sierra Canyon to determine the league champion. Sierra Canyon was the No. 1 seed and Notre Dame was the No. 2 seed. Because the championship game won’t be played, a league champion will not be crowned. However, both schools have agreed to submit the final league standings the way the two teams were seeded to begin the tournament.
“The Notre Dame High School community stands with the Sierra Canyon community during this difficult time. In moments like this, competition is secondary, and our focus is on care, compassion, and support for all those affected,” school athletic director Alec Moss said.
The game cannot be rescheduled because the CIF Southern Section calendar for the regular season ended Wednesday.
Sierra Canyon (22-1) went 7-0 in the Mission League, including a 78-74 victory over Notre Dame on Jan. 9 on ESPN2. Notre Dame (19-6) finished 5-2 in league play. Both are expected to be in the CIF Southern Section Open Division playoffs.
The playoff brackets will be released Saturday at noon.
NOTABLE AREA LEAGUE CHAMPIONS
League champions were crowned this week. Here are the league champions and other worthwhile notes from around the area before heading into the playoffs.
In the Mission League, Sierra Canyon, Notre Dame, Crespi and Loyola earned automatic playoff berths for advancing to the league tournament semifinal. Harvard-Westlake and St. Francis finished fifth and sixth, respectively, and will look to earn an at-large berth to the playoffs. Due to their high computer rankings, both teams should be fine. Both could even still be in the Open Division.
Oaks Christian won the Marmonte League outright after defeating Westlake 49-40 Tuesday night to clinch the crown. There’s a three-way tie for second place between Calabasas, Westlake and Thousand Oaks at 6-4 in the league. Calabasas and Westlake will be automatic qualifiers. Thousand Oaks will be an at-large, according to a league representative.
Golden Valley won the Foothill League with a 10-2 record. Valencia (9-3), Saugus (7-5) and Hart (6-5) finished in the top four to earn automatic qualifying playoff berths.
Village Christian won the Olympic League. Heritage Christian finished in second place.
Knight (Golden League) went 14-0 in league play and finished its season 22-3. Milken won the Liberty League (10-1) under first-year coach Ryan Coleman.
