Gov’t Mule was formed in 1994 by Warren Haynes, bassist Allen Woody and drummer Matt Abts while Haynes and Woody were members of the Allman Brothers Band. Originally conceived as a side project during breaks from Allman Brothers touring, Gov’t Mule eventually became a full-time band in 1997.

Haynes’ deep connection to the Allman Brothers Band explains why the tour update appeared on the group’s official Instagram account. Haynes joined the Allman Brothers Band during its late-1980s reunion and remained a key member through multiple eras, performing with the band until its final shows in 2014.

Though the Allman Brothers Band officially ended following the deaths of Gregg Allman and Butch Trucks, its music continues through former members, tribute projects, and related acts like Gov’t Mule.

Gov’t Mule has released numerous studio albums since their 1995 debut and has built a reputation for extended live performances rooted in blues, Southern rock, and improvisation. Despite lineup changes over the years, Haynes has remained the band’s creative anchor. In 2026, Haynes is also balancing Gov’t Mule’s touring schedule with his solo acoustic run, Winter of Warren 2026.
