Shane Beamer is amidst a pivotal offseason heading into his sixth year at the helm in South Carolina, and it also figures to be an abnormal one due to the ongoing renovations at Williams-Brice Stadium.
As 247Sports’ Hale McGranahan shared on Wednesday, Beamer spoke with Senior Deputy Director of Athletics Jeff Crane and believes that the annual Garnet and Black Spring Game is unlikely to take place at the Gamecocks’ usual home.
“I was just meeting with Jeff (Crane) about that before we came in here. I would not anticipate a spring game taking place in Williams-Brice Stadium, because of the construction – shoutout Greg Hughes and Contract Construction,” Shane Beamer said. “But having said that, we’ve got the greatest fans in America. I want to make sure that we always do right by our fans, so we’ve got to do what’s best for construction. We’ve got to do what’s best for our fans. We’ve got to do what’s best for our team, in regard to spring practice.
Should have some more information on that as we go forward, but don’t anticipate an actual game, so to speak, taking place in (Williams-Brice Stadium).”
The renovations are a multi-year project that is projected to be worked on between football seasons until August of 2028.
Still wanting to hold some form of a game-simulation event, it seems that Beamer could be exploring other options when it comes to the location of a scrimmage.
Following a disappointing 4-8 campaign that occurred after South Carolina was ranked No. 13 in the preseason AP Poll, Beamer and the Gamecocks are desperate for a bounce-back season. It’s likely that the fiery head coach would want to host a solid spring game in some form to keep his team in prime condition heading into the summer.
