UA theater professor launches debut novel at Ernest and Hadley bookstore

Ernest and Hadley Booksellers hosted Seth Panitch, the head of MFA Acting at the University, on Tuesday to launch his new book “Antique: A Novel.”

Panitch said he goes to Ernest and Hadley often, and he was glad they were willing to host the launch of his book.

Easty Lambert-Brown, the owner of Ernest and Hadley, said she loves hosting events like this. She said the store sold out of copies of “Antique,” adding that it would need to get at least another dozen copies.

“These signings are a blast, especially when they’re successful,” Lambert-Brown said. Lambert-Brown said Panitch was very proactive in signing up for success, which helped draw customers to the bookstore and the event.

“I love that he had this advertised all over town, that kind of thing just makes my heart sing. It’s authors like him that make us more successful,” Lambert-Brown said. “We help each other, it’s a very symbiotic relationship.”

Joleigh Bonds, a senior studying acting, came to the book launch because Panitch is one of her professors. She said she could see his passion for creativity through his writing in the book.

“Seth is really good at wordplay and imagery because he’s an actor,” Bonds said. “I always forget that feeling so much emotion is an actor’s strong suit.”

Panitch said his career in theater helped him with certain aspects of the book, as every writer draws from their experiences and their education.

“A history professor might set their book in a time period they know about, and a philosophy professor might tackle a philosophical problem in their book. Being a theater professor helped me write dialogue, because on the stage, everything happens through the words,” Panitch said. “Still, if anyone wants to write a book they’re best off studying creative writing.”

Lambert-Brown said Ernest and Hadley have had a lot of book signings this past month, largely due to partnerships with the University. She added that the store has had English and anthropology professors as well.

Panitch said it was very important to him to have the book launch in Tuscaloosa.

“As a writer, you draw from your home — from the soil and heart of the place where you grew up,” Panitch said.

Panitch will be continuing his book tour across the country and will return for a book signing in Tuscaloosa at Barnes and Noble on March 28 at 12 p.m.
