ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Nicholas Kieffer, a former prison guard acquitted in the death of Greece inmate Robert Brooks, has filed a lawsuit against the state. News10NBC’s Declan Stablow spoke with Robert Ricks, the father of Robert Brooks. Ricks expressed feeling disrespected by Kieffer’s lawsuit.
The suit accuses the state of malicious prosecution, defamation, and negligence in training.
“He might have been inconvenienced. His reputation, his character might have been questioned. But my son, myself, my grandson, my daughter, his mom, they were hurt,” Ricks said.
Kieffer’s lawsuit claims he was not involved in the assault that killed Brooks and that he only followed his training. However, Ricks believes that should not absolve him of responsibility.
“You have some type of obligation to the people. And my son was a person to protect them from harm. Even if that harm is coming from your coworkers,” Ricks said.
Part of Kieffer’s suit accuses the state of negligence in training, a point Ricks agrees with on a broader scale.
“It’s obviously an issue that the training that these, correctional officers receive is inadequate or inappropriate for the environment that they’re in,” Ricks said.
Ricks is working with the organization End Prison Violence to help pass legislation aimed at holding prisons accountable for inmate abuse.
