Chip Kelly introduced as Northwesterns new offensive coordinator

The Northwestern Wildcats have a daunting schedule this season, and they’ve tabbed Chip Kelly to be their new offensive coordinator.

Kelly has a wealth of experience at both the college and pro levels, having served as head coach of an Oregon team that won three consecutive Pac-12 titles and offensive coordinator of an Ohio State team that won a national championship in the 2024 season.

He’ll be bringing that to Evanston as David Braun looks to juice up the Wildcats’ offense, with their 2026 schedule one of the toughest in the country.

Kelly said during his introductory press conference that he’s focused on getting to know his new players, and tailoring his offensive scheme to fit their talents.

“Obviously your goal is to be as productive as you possibly can, but the biggest thing right now is getting to know the players, figuring out what they do well, what their strengths and what their weaknesses are,” he said.

At the pro level, Kelly won the NFC East as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles in 2013, and most recently served as the offensive coordinator of the Las Vegas Raiders.

Kelly will have some interesting new weapons to utilize as he takes over the Wildcats, including former Michigan State quarterback Aidan Chiles and former Florida State running back Gavin Sawchuk, both of whom came to Evanston via the transfer portal.

He also landed tight end Luke Dehnicke, who had 61 catches for 1,119 yards and 14 touchdowns at Minnesota-Duluth in FCS play last season.

Needless to say, the road for the Wildcats will be a tough one. They will welcome Deion Sanders’ Colorado squad to the lakefront on September 19, and they’ll follow that up with their Big Ten opener, a road game against reigning national champion Indiana.

The Wildcats will also visit Kelly’s former schools, taking on Oregon in Eugene on Halloween and Ohio State in Columbus on November 14.

Northwestern will open the new Ryan Field on Friday, October 2 when they welcome Penn State to Evanston.
